As the world transitions to renewable energy, the global economy will become more dependent on weather than at any point since the Industrial Revolution. And due to climate change, the weather that our future economy is tied to will be drastically different from the weather we’ve historically experienced. This means that managing weather-based risk, and weather-based variability is the number #1 challenge facing the energy grid.

Sunairio’s mission is to disrupt weather prediction as we know it to build the most advanced platform for valuing, managing, and operating renewable energy. Instead of relying on physics-based weather models that are bias-prone and slow, we use machine learning and advanced statistics to generate high-fidelity simulations of future weather risk–and we do this on multi-year timescales at hourly (or less) resolution. We work with renewable energy project developers, storage operators, energy buyers, energy suppliers, portfolio managers, traders, and utilities to deliver actionable insights into the hardest energy problems.

The Sunairio team has decades of experience in energy, renewables, climate modeling and software engineering. We’re now seeking a data engineer who has proven experience in software engineering for data-centric products. At Sunairio, the Data Engineer will be responsible for scaling and orchestrating databases, big data pipelines, machine learning algorithms, climate simulations, pricing models, and more.

The Data Engineer will be responsible for:

  • Coding, testing, deploying, orchestrating, monitoring, documenting and troubleshooting cloud-based data engineering processing and associated automation in accordance with best practices and security standards throughout the development lifecycle

  • Scaling machine learning models and simulation data of energy resources, energy market prices, and energy sector environmental emissions, with an immediate focus on North American electricity markets

  • Working closely with data scientists, data architects and business partners to identify, capture, collect, and format data from external sources, internal systems, and the data lakehouse to extract features of interest

  • Building and maintaining flexible data pipelines for external data that feeds ML models

  • Building continuous monitoring of infrastructure and model performance

  • Building and supporting data APIs to deliver insights derived from Sunairio’s simulations, predictions, and data

  • A passion for building new solutions that drive the energy transition

  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering, with a proven ability to build production-level data-centric products

  • Strong SQL and data warehousing knowledge; PostgreSQL preferred

  • Experience building, maintaining, and developing with data lakes

  • Experience building big data applications in Amazon Web Services (AWS)

  • Experience with the Python scientific computing environment (Pandas/Numpy/SciPy)

  • B.S. or higher degree in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, an engineering discipline, a related field, or equivalent professional experience

  • A creative problem-solver with outstanding communication skills and a commitment to technical excellence

  • Intellectual curiosity

  • The opportunity to join an industry-disrupting startup on the ground floor–with significant equity compensation

  • The focus to work on innovative solutions to problems of critical importance

  • A truly collaborative team environment

  • The ability to help shape company culture

  • Competitive salary and incentive-based compensation plan

  • “Platinum” health insurance plan

  • 401(k) with company match

  • Flexible vacation policy

  • Amazing swag
