About Sunairio
Sunairio uses AI, probabilistic modeling, and high-resolution climate data to forecast energy supply and demand with granular, site-specific accuracy. Our core product, Sunairio ONE, generates thousands of realistic scenarios (ensembles) to surface uncertainty and extreme-event risk so that traders, operators, and developers can manage volatility, optimize decisions, and plan for extreme events. This is not weather for weather’s sake. We translate weather and climate risk into high-impact grid and market outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Engineering will be responsible for:
- Architecting and scaling a massive-throughput data lakehouse environment (Apache Iceberg on S3, Snowflake, and Postgres Aurora) capable of ingesting, processing, and maintaining PB-scale geospatial, timeseries, and unstructured data.
- Productionalizing data pipelines from models delivered by data science on live and real-time data, making them available in the platform and API
- Leading and mentoring a multidisciplinary team, providing technical oversight for both the Python-based ETL/simulation pipelines to ensure high performance and code quality.
- Defining the technical roadmap in collaboration with executive leadership, balancing the rapid delivery of SaaS analytics features for energy traders with long-term infrastructure stability and cost efficiency.
- Establishing engineering best practices across the development lifecycle (e.g.-CI/CD, automated testing, and comprehensive documentation) to maintain high developer velocity within a lean startup environment.
- Optimizing the delivery of complex simulations, ensuring that climate and weather forecasts are translated into responsive, low-latency insights via robust data APIs and a seamless frontend experience.
- Building a large-scale OLAP system to support self-service analytics
- Managing the productivity stack to streamline cross-functional communication between engineering, data science, and business stakeholders.
- Ensuring system reliability and security through the implementation of continuous monitoring, observability, and rigorous security standards for all cloud-based services and metadata management.
What we’re looking for
- A passion for building new solutions that drive the energy transition
- 8+ years of engineering experience, with at least 2-3 years in a formal leadership/management role.
- Proven experience with Big Data architectures (Iceberg, Snowflake, or Spark) and cloud storage (S3).
- Experience in the SaaS analytics space, preferably dealing with timeseries or geospatial data.
- Excellent communication skills—you can explain a data bottleneck to a CEO and a product roadmap to a DevOps engineer.
- Experience building big data applications in Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Experience with the Python scientific computing environment (Pandas/Numpy/SciPy)
- Experience with OLAP tools (e.g.-Apache Druid, Clickhouse, Apache Doris)
- B.S. or higher degree in Economics, Finance, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, an engineering discipline, a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- A creative problem-solver with outstanding communication skills and a commitment to technical excellence
- Intellectual curiosity
